SUMMARY:Vanessa Collier\, Blues Saxophone Superstar
DESCRIPTION:VANESSA COLLIER\, Sax Superstar\n12-Time Blues Music Award Nominee\, 4-Time Winner\nFeb. 25\, Tues.  – Hotel Congress Plaza\nReserved Seating: $30 + fees\nGeneral Admission: Advance $20 | Day of Show $25 + fees\nDoors 6:30\,  Show 7:30PM | GA Standing | 21 & Over\nTICKETS are HERE \nSinger/songwriter Vanessa Collier’s sixth album Do It My Own Way came out September 13 via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room\, Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records\, especially that of the Staples Singers. The second single “Wild As a Rainstorm\,” which dives deep into soul territory\, powerfully gives advice to women and people who feel left out to ignore the naysayers and “Be a tapestry of dreams.” The track has been added to Spotify’s official Retro Soul playlist. The groove and horns would make Willie Mitchell proud\, and indeed features legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges. The vocals are powerful\, awe-inspiring\, and undeniably soulful vocals. \nThe songwriter/bandleader made her Chicago Blues Festival debut this year\, in front of tens of thousands. Best known in the blues world – she’s a twelve-time Blues Music Award nominee and four-time winner\, including for the monumental Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year\, Horn Player of the Year\, and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year this year – Do It My Own Way finds her influenced by soul artists like Mavis Staples\, Sharon Jones\, James Brown\, and Aretha Franklin. \nBlues Blast Magazine said\, “Vanessa is an important part of the future of the blues.” Born in Texas\, growing up in Maryland\, launching her career in Philadelphia\, and now residing in South Carolina\, Collier grew up listening to an eclectic variety of music. After graduating from Berklee College of Music\, she joined blues legend Joe Louis Walker’s band\, going solo at his urging\, and has become a notable artist “whose rise to the top is nothing short of meteoric” (Making a Scene). She has opened concerts for Blues Traveler. Her prior studio album\, Heart On The Line\, garnered rave reviews and spent nine weeks in the Billboard Blues Album Chart top 15.

SUMMARY:ELLIS PAUL at 191 Toole
DESCRIPTION:The Rialto is offering $5 off for \nELLIS PAUL\n“One of the most highly regarded\nsinger/songwriters to come out of the Boston area.”\nFriday\, Feb 21. 8:00 PM – Seated show\nDiscount code: ellis \nEllis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes\, loves\, losses of those he observes\, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. \nHis songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award-winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way\, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. His new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances.

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Steve Poltz\, December 8
DESCRIPTION:STEVE POLTZ – Sunday\, Dec. 8th.\nSpecial venue\, special show\n \nThe Historic Presidio San Augustine Del Tucson\nSunday\, December 8\, Doors 2:30\, SHOW at 3PM\nGen. Adm seating. Food/drink/concessions.\n196 N Court Ave. (corner of W. Washington)\n$26 advance\, $32 day of show\nPurchase ONLINE here \nTKMA and Rhythm and Roots presents a special concert in a special venue. Legendary singer-songwriter Steve Poltz brings his great songs and hilarious storytelling to the Presidio Museum for an intimate\, outdoor Sunday afternoon concert. \nGeneral Admission seating. Food and drink concessions will be provided. This is an outdoor event. Please dress accordingly.  \n**You may bring your own chair if you prefer but it can only be set up on the edge of the provided seated section. \nIt might’ve even been last night\, but Steve Poltz just played the greatest show of his life. Guess what? The next show will be even greater\, making that show the greatest show of his life.  \nAre you starting to notice a trend?  He isn’t shy about it either. Even after most likely thousands of shows (but who’s counting?)\, he hits the stage with the same amount of energy and always makes sure to declare\, “This is the greatest show of my life.”  \nIt’s why he’s quietly emerged as the kind of live phenomenon celebrated passionately by a diehard fanbase worldwide and renowned as a festival favorite everywhere from Bluesfest in Byron Bay and High Sierra Music Festival in California and Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado to Cayamo Cruise (where he actually got married). It’s why his music has crept into pop culture via collaborations with everyone from Jewel and Billy Strings to Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood\, and even the late Mojo Nixon. It’s why after over a dozen albums\, he’s still creatively firing on all cylinders and critically acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone\, Associated Press\, Billboard\, and many more.  \nIn the end\, Steve is probably gearing up for the greatest show of his life as you read this. Thankfully\, that will never change. \nHe signs off\, “I’m just a weirdo\, a freak\, a bon vivant\, a rounder\, a rabble rouser\, a workaholic\, a people pleaser\, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.” \nCan we say it might just be The Greatest Show on Earth?! Nevertheless\, the next gig will be the greatest show for him (and for you too)…

SUMMARY:Two-Time Grammy Nominee\, Robbie Fulks
DESCRIPTION:Robbie Fulks\nCountry\, Bluegrass\, and Americana with a huge dose of humor.\nNovember 14\, at 191 Toole\nFREE PARKING on site!\nSeated show – doors at 6:30\, show at 7:30\n$25 advance-  at Rialto Box office -in person or call 520-740-1000\nBox office hours – Tuesday – Saturday- Noon to 5 pm\nonline TICKETS HERE \nRobbie Fulks is a singer\, recording artist\, instrumentalist\, composer\, and songwriter. His current release\, Bluegrass Vacation on Compass Records\, returns him to his bluegrass roots\, with a large group of masterful musicians including Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Justin Moses\, Ronnie McCoury\, Alison Brown\, David Grier\, Tim O’Brien\, Todd Phillips\, John Cowan\, Brennen Leigh\, Randy Kohrs\, Sierra Hull\, Stuart Duncan\, Shad Cobb\, and Chris Eldridge. Across 11 new original songs (and one freewheeling interpretation of the Delmore Brothers)\, Robbie covers themes like small-town blues\, the endurance of childhood memory\, inebriation\, love\, divorce\, the role of music in strengthening family bonds\, losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s\, and bluegrass itself. \nHis most recent release\, 2017’s Upland Stories\, earned year’s-best recognition from NPR and Rolling Stone among many others\, as well as two Grammy® nominations\, for folk album and American roots song (“Alabama At Night”). \nFulks was born in York\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania\, the North Carolina Piedmont\, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad\, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records. He attended Columbia College in New York City. \nIn 1983 he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band. He taught music at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996\, and worked as a staff songwriter on Music Row in Nashville from 1993 to 1998. His early solo work — Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997) — helped define the “alternative country” movement of the 1990s. For most of the present century\, Robbie has been playing acoustic music through microphones\, which lets him give more attention to his flatpicking and banjo playing\, and complements his more sepia-toned subject matter — the slings of time\, the troubles of common people. His repertory of traveling players includes folks like Shad Cobb\, Missy Raines\, Robbie Gjersoe\, Jenny Scheinman\, Matt Flinner\, Don Stiernberg\, and Jesse Cobb. However\, two non-acoustic recent side projects are his 2018 duo record with Linda Gail Lewis\, Wild! Wild! Wild!\, an NPR favorite which leans to rock-and-roll and classic country-and-western\, and his double-vinyl reinterpretation of the Bob Dylan record Street-Legal\, which is titled 16\, is musically unbounded and is no one’s favorite. \nRadio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” “Mountain Stage\,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Later with Carson Daly\, and 30 Rock. From 2004 to 2008 he hosted an hourlong performance/interview program for XM satellite radio\, “Robbie’s Secret Country.” Artists who have covered his songs include Sam Bush\, Kelly Hogan\, Andrew Bird\, Mollie O’Brien\, Rosie Flores\, John Cowan\, and Old 97s. \nRobbie’s writing on music and life have appeared in GQ\, Blender\, the Chicago Reader\, DaCapo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies for 2001 and 2004\, Amplified: Fiction from Leading Alt-Country\, Indie Rock\, Blues and Folk Musicians\, and A Guitar and A Pen: Stories by Country Music’s Greatest Songwriters. As an instrumentalist\, he has accompanied the Irish fiddle master Liz Carroll\, the distinguished jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman\, and the New Orleans pianist Dr. John. As a producer his credits include Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck (Sugar Hill\, 2004) and Big Thinkin’ by Dallas Wayne (Hightone\, 2000). Theatrical credits include “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” and Harry Chapin’s “Cottonpatch Gospel.” He served twice as judge for the Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar competition. He tours yearlong with various configurations. \nBesides country and bluegrass music\, Robbie is fiercely fond of Charles Mingus\, P.G. Wodehouse\, quantum mechanics\, his wife Donna\, comedy in almost all forms\, cooking\, swimming laps\, the past\, Arthur Schopenhauer\, Universal horror movies\, his grandson and even his sons\, coastal towns in the offseason\, and rye whiskey\, though in nothing like that order.

SUMMARY:Dustbowl Revival's New Date! October 5.
DESCRIPTION:– Postponed from Friday\, 12/08/23\nThe Show will now take place on 10/5/2024\n\n\nDoors 7pm\, Show 7:30pm\n\n\nADV $20 | DOS $25\nTickets HERE\n\n\n\nDustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting\, the group collected a devoted fanbase coast-to-coast. After throwing five of their own virtual Sway-At-Home festivals during the shut-down featuring nearly forty artists\, the always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin\, Josh Heffernan\, Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band\, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus.\n\n\n\nAfter spending years on the road\, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour\, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China\, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful\, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows. Even so\, with the bands emotional new single “Beside You” and 2020’s ambitious full length album\, Is It You\, Is It Me\, they wanted to strike into new terrain. As they mined new energetic material from the place where folk and funk music meet\, they teamed up with producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive\, Josh Ritter) and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens). The latest album strikes a more personal note than ever before\, representing the latest stage in a band that never stops exploring new sounds.\n\n\n\nMany of the songs in this new collection feel like small theater pieces coming to life verse by verse. It’s the yin-yang conversational harmony that is the true specialty of lead songwriter and singer Z. Lupetin\, who also doubles as a playwright and recently wrote the music for a Greek tragedy set in Gold Rush era California. While longtime co-lead Liz Beebe has stepped away from the band after a long run\, an amazing young talent in Lashon Halley has stepped in to bring new life to the songs\, matching Lupetin’s intense vocal range with her own. There’s a new widescreen expansiveness to these new songs that wouldn’t be out of place in a packed arena or orchestra hall with a full neon light show. Acting like a nimble rock orchestra\, during the recording process\, each member played multiple instruments\, and the group brought in new musicians on symphonic brass\, and local friends to sing as a spur-of-the-moment choir.\n\n\n\nIf one thing is clear\, Is It You\, Is It Me represents another large leap forward for Dustbowl Revival\, coming after their acclaimed self-titled 2017 album. Produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show\, Drop Kick Murphy’s)\, it transitioned the group from a “roots dance party band” that continues to thrive on the festival circuit\, to a nuanced ensemble embracing more soulful territory without losing their original fire. That self-titled record was a direct bridge to the newest work\, rising number to one on the Amazon Americana chart and featuring a funky favorite “Honey I Love You” where the band joyfully teaming up with blues master Keb Mo’. Their heartache folk number “Got Over”\, surprised the band by racking up over seven million streams and counting online. “Beside You” stayed in the Americana charts for months and “Enemy” became a staple on SiriusXM\, especially during the 2020 election. To top it off\, Billboard Magazine added about that Is It You\, Is It Me is “the biggest sonic work of the Venice\, Calif.-based troupe’s career.”

SUMMARY:Ian Moore Band\, Mark Insley opens
DESCRIPTION:Ian Moore\, Saturday July 6th\n7pm doors\, 7:30 show\nAdv $17 | Dos $20\nTICKETS HERE \nIan Moore\, the Seattle-based\, Austin\, TX-born guitar player\, singer and songwriter makes the proverbial renaissance man look lazy. Coming on the heels of Strange Days\, his most successful record since his eponymous debut and despite a never-ending cycle of touring\, Moore offers a new release of bright\, blazing rock-n-roll that combines his legendary guitar prowess with radio-friendly songs that showcase his elastic\, soul-inflected vocals. “It’s a very different climate right now. When we hit a city\, it doesn’t matter that I have 14 records\, radio hits\, etc. The only thing that matters is we show up and leave the people feeling they saw something amazing. It keeps me hungry\, and I like the challenge” says Moore. \nFor years\, Ian has had his eyes on the challenges faced by musicians of every stripe\, having experienced the spectrum of artist successes and tribulations over a nearly 30-year career. In response\, he founded the artist’s healthcare alliance SMASH (Seattle Musicians Access to Sustainable Healthcare) and has joined the board of NARAS for the Pacific Northwest as governor and head of the advocacy committee. \nYou might have been surprised to hear Moore’s voice popping up on major network shows on prime time television this past year; several selections were prominently being featured as performances on both American Idol and The Voice (“Satisfied” and “Blue Sky”). \nMoore’s story is familiar to most critics; his initial record on Capricorn propelled him to national tours with the Rolling Stones\, ZZ Top and Bob Dylan\, acting in the acclaimed indie feature Sling Blade and having Ice Cube direct the video for his track “Harlem.” \nMoore deviated from his initial blues-oriented guitar sound on subsequent records\, touching on graceful pop songs and the psychedelic as well as British pub rock and deep Americana. Toronto and its 6 tracks represent those influences in such a way that they have informed his songwriting\, but is likely more recognizable as a strong collection of the kind of guitar rock his core fan base would respond to immediately. \nOn the triumphant “You Gotta Know My Name”\, Moore lampoons rich\, entitled hipster kids. “They get their marching orders from Pitchfork and fill their brains with coke and MDMA\, looking for soul and depth”\, Moore explains. “The chorus is a way of claiming my space as a person that has been slogging it out\, in and out of fashion for most of my career\, with a deeper sense of music\, style and substance than the people that might quickly write me off.” \nThe anthemic “Lords of the Levee” is a contemporary\, relevant take on the atmosphere of the U.S. right now.“ It’s an attack on group thought\,” Moore says\, “which is most typically shrouded in God and country\, that allows people to do some really terrible things. I wrote it about the Alabama voters rights act\, and how the people that opposed it used both God and country to justify their abhorrent behavior.” \nAnd it captures Ian’s blistering live sound probably better than any recording he’s released in recent memory. The catchy\, propulsive “Looking for the Sound” is a play on the record title “El Sonido Nuevo\,” which he wrote with his last group\, the Lossy Coils. “It comes from a Mighty Boosh skit\, but the gist of the song is about what it is to be a touring musician\, trying to build soul and culture\, still believing the same things I believed when I was 18\, and looking for open hearts and minds to feel it.” \nOn other tracks on the record\, “Satellite” and the slightly outrageous “Rock N Roll\,” Moore explores the underbelly of rock\, the bright side and the dangers of living your life in the magic of midnight.

SUMMARY:Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express\nFriday\, June 7\n$20 adv | $24 day of – TIX HERE\n7:30 show\, 7 PM Doors \nSince his neo-psychedelic Green On Red days\, Chuck Prophet has been turning out country\, folk\, blues\, and Brill Building classicism. After a false start recording in his hometown of San Francisco\, Prophet decided to get out of Dodge and found himself re-energized in Upstate New York\, just a few miles from the Vermont border\, to make 2020’s The Land That Time Forgot\, a record that is as much a 21st century exorcism as it is America. \nWritten mostly with Prophet longtime collaborator and co-conspirator Klipschutz\, the songs that inhabit The Land That Time Forgot come at you from an array of locations both real and imagined\, including San Francisco’s Tenderloin\, an English roundabout\, and Nixonland\, while hanging out with the ghosts of Johnny Thunders\, Willie Wonka\, and John the Baptist\, and contemplating the train that carried Abraham Lincoln home for the final time. \nTo complement the critically acclaimed album\, in early 2022\, Prophet released The Land That Time Forgot Revisited\, a four-song digital live EP recorded at the Make Out Room in San Francisco featuring “Meet Me at the Roundabout\,” “Womankind\,” “Fast Kid\,” and “Kiss Me Deadly\,” with his band\, the Mission Express\, and a string quartet (the Makeout Room Quartet). \n“I know a little bit about how to craft a studio LP\,” says Prophet. “But recording live with a string quartet on a linoleum floor on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in an empty barroom in San Francisco’s Mission District is something different. For one thing\, there is an actual “arranger.” Like Nelson Riddle. Or what Randy Newman does\, adding his own secret sauce to the compositional gene pool that has scored half the soundtracks in Hollywood history. They’re a new way into the songs and an adventure finding our way out. There’s still an acoustic Mission Express in the mix\, along with the strings. Three songs from The Land That Time Forgot reimagined\, plus a Lita Ford cover that has to be heard to be believed.”

Rayford’s phrasing is intimate and conversational and the soulful gravel in his voice hints at his firsthand experience with hardship. \nHe grew up in Texas\, his childhood marked by poverty and loss. “I grew up in gospel and soul\,” but switched to contemporary music began about 15 years ago in the San Diego area\, where he sang lead vocals with a R&B/Funk band called Urban Gypsys. With this band he had the privilege of sharing the stage with many notable artists such as The Average White Band\, Dennis Quaid\, Joe Luis Walker\, Kal David\, Super Diamond & Venice\, to name a few. \nAfter dabbling in blues\, Suga realized that the blues was where his heart and soul belonged. In his blues band\, Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz\, he represented San Diego (Blues Lovers United San Diego) in Memphis Tennessee January 26th- 28th\, 2006 at the International Blues Challenge (IBC)\, and brought home the 2nd place prize. In September 2008\, the Boyz won the LAMN Jam Grand Slam Urban Artist of the Year title by a landslide; they beat out hundreds of competitors. The band was offered a distribution deal on the spot by RBC Records. Tabitha Berg wrote\, “The band’s most valuable ingredient is that of the band’s dynamic front man Sugaray\, he knows how to read and work a room. While most artists simply perform\, exceptional artists are responsive to the mood of the crowd. The energy shifted when they took the stage\, and they had the crowd on its feet within seconds.” \nMay 2011\, Sugaray became one of the lead vocalists for the Mannish Boys\, who were under Delta Groove management. Double Dynamite the Mannish Boys CD that won Best Traditional Blues Album in May 2013 at the Blues Music Awards. His first solo CD Blind Alley was released in 2010 and garnered critical acclaim. His second solo CD Dangerous\, was released in 2013 under the Delta Groove label and debuted at # 2 on Blues Debut Chart\, #6 on the Roots Music Chart and #2 on The Living Blues Chart. \nAt the 40th Blues Music Awards in 2019\, Rayford was named as ‘Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year’.\nRayford’s latest album\, Somebody Save Me\, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category. \nThe Sugaray Rayford Band won “Best Blues Band” for the 2019 Blues Blast Music Awards. \nAt the 41st Blues Music Awards in May 2020\, Rayford was presented with two Blues Music Awards for ‘B.B King Entertainer of the Year’ and ‘Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year’.

SUMMARY:AJ Lee and Blue Summit
DESCRIPTION:AJ LEE and BLUE SUMMIT\nHotel Congress Plaza Stage\nFriday\, May 17\, Doors at 7\, show at 7:30\nTickets $17 adv\, $23 at door\nFind Tickets HERE \n “Could This Kid Be the Next Allison Krauss?” Mother Jones magazine asked about AJ Lee — and for good reason. She has won the Northern California Bluegrass Society’s (NCBS) Best Female Vocalist award nine times by age 21! Popular Webzine Californiality called AJ “California’s Hottest Singer” because of her jaw-droppingly beautiful voice. AJ began singing and performing on stage at the astonishing age of five. By twelve\, she began writing her own songs and showcasing them nation-wide. She has traveled with many bands\, including “The Tuttles with AJ Lee\,” which was featured at numerous festivals across the U.S. and beyond. She is a fantastic mandolinist and songwriter with a gorgeous voice. \nAJ Lee and Blue Summit was established in Santa Cruz\, California in 2015. Led by singer\, songwriter\, and mandolinist\, AJ Lee\, the in-demand bluegrass/Americana band has performed all over the world but finds home in California’s Bay Area. In 2019\, they released their debut album\, Like I Used To. Their second full length project\, I’ll Come Back\, came out August 2021 followed be two breakout years touring at festivals and venues all over the USA. 2024 will see the release of their yet untitled third studio album supported by headlining shows and festivals around the country. \nUnlike their first record\, which featured experimentation with session musicians and electric instruments\, the new project is a pure reflection of the live sound of the group\, hearkening back to their acoustic roots. Each band member performs at their peak\, and the variety of songs on the record caters to their broad fanbase. Certain tracks (“Put Your Head Down\,” and “Faithful\,”) fall more in the classic bluegrass realm of songwriting\, while others (“Lemons and Tangerines\,” and “I’ll Come Back\,”) fall into that hard-to-define realm of acoustic Americana that blends mesmerizing lyricism and acoustic mastery. \nAlthough falling loosely under the bluegrass label\, AJLBS generally plays without banjo\, with Sullivan Tuttle (Winfield Flatpicking National Champion) and Scott Gates on steel stringed acoustic guitars\, AJ on mandolin\, Jan Purat on fiddle\, and Forrest Marowitz on upright bass – a configuration effectively used to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not commonly found in the music of their peers. Drawing from influences such as country\, soul\, swing\, rock\, and jam music\, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music. \nArtist Website Here         Youtube Channel HERE \nWinners – 2019 FreshGrass Band competition\nWinfield Natl. SUMMARY:Lola Kirke
DESCRIPTION:Lola Kirke\nThursday April 25 with Dale Hollow\nHotel Congress Plaza Stage\nDoors 7pm\, Show 7:30pm\n$10 Gen admission\, $20 guaranteed seating\n$15 Gen Admission\, day of Show\nTICKETS here \nLola Kirke has played many roles as an actress (“Mozart in the Jungle\,” “Gone Girl\,” “Winning Time”)\, but as a musician her sights have always been set squarely on Country. “I don’t totally get it either\,” laughs the London born New York raised Kirke. “But I’ve always been drawn to dynamic parts for women\, and I can’t think of any other genre where we can be mothers\, heartbreakers\, glamorous\, gritty\, drunk\, tender\, and everything in between all at once.” She’s also just a sucker for the songwriting. “I wanted to know how I could make the most complicated feelings sound simple\, or how to make the saddest things be fun or witty. Great Country just does that so well.” \nAfter relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville in 2020\, Kirke devoted herself to honing the craft she’d come to admire so deeply in artists like The Judds\, The Pistol Annies\, and Dolly Parton. Shortly thereafter\, she released her critically acclaimed sophomore LP “Lady For Sale” on the much respected Third Man Records in 2022\, and played sold out shows with the likes of Jenny Lewis\, and Margo Price. \nIn her downtime\, Kirke threw herself into writing\, both on her own and with others. “I was nervous a lot of people in Nashville wouldn’t take me seriously. There’s so much talent there. I was intimidated. Plus while being a musician turned actor is kind of chic\, the other way around can be kind of cringey—even to me. Also growing up Jewish and singing Country isn’t exactly a normal trajectory\, so I felt I had a lot working against me.” \nBut Kirke’s commitment and talent were clear enough to hitmakers like Aaron Ratiere (Miranda Lambert)\, Mary Kutter (Bailey Zimmerman\, Nate Smith)\, and Jason Nix (Lainey Wilson)\, with whom she wrote the bulk of her latest EP Country Curious. \nTo achieve the more contemporary sound Kirke envisioned (“I was kind of like—what would happen if I wrote ‘Bro Country’ but for girls?” she says\, only half jokingly)\, she enlisted the Grammy nominated\, chart topping Elle King\, who’d been itching make her debut as a producer. “I knew she’d be the right fit. She always been so supportive of me and I’ve always loved how she blends her roots rock sound with a real pop sensibility.” Their lifelong friendship made the collaboration even more of a shoe in. “She was the first girl I knew singing Country in New York City!” Kirke beams when talking about King. \nIf Kirke’s doubts about her place in music didn’t dwindle after First Aid Kit invited her on tour and jump on board to feature on the EP’s first single\, “All My Exes Live in LA\,” one can imagine it’s only a matter of time. “Lola is a stunning combination of wildness\, beauty\, and humor\, with a voice that digs inside my head and heart\,” says the legendary Rosanne Cash\, one of Kirke’s all time heroes\, and her collaborator on “Karma.” “I honestly adore this woman and count myself both a friend and her biggest fan.” Cash continues. \nAfter listening to Kirke sing\, or catching one of her effervescent live shows\, you’ll be hard pressed to disagree. \nArtist Website: www.lolakirkemusic.com

SUMMARY:OLD 97's on the Plaza
DESCRIPTION:The Old 97’s\nThursday April 4th\n\nw/ special guests Holler Choir\n\n\n7pm doors\, 7:30 show\n\n\nADV $25 | DOS $30  Tickets HERE\n\n\n\n\nFormed in Dallas\, Texas\, Old 97’s first emerged in the early ’90s with an adrenaline pumping blend of rock and roll swagger\, punk snarl\, and old-school twang that quickly brought them into the national spotlight. Conventional wisdom places the band at the forefront of a musical movement that would come to be known as “alternative country\,” but\, as the New York Times so succinctly put it\, their sound always “leaned more toward the Clash than the Carter Family.” Fueled by breakneck tempos\, distorted guitars\, and wry storytelling\, the foursome built a reputation for high-energy albums and even higher energy shows\, earning themselves performances everywhere from Conan and Letterman to Bonnaroo and Lollaplooza alongside countless rave reviews. NPR lauded the group as a “pioneering force\,” while Rolling Stone hailed their music’s “whiskey-wrecked nihilism and slow-burn heartbreak\,” and The New Yorker praised their songwriting as “blistered\, blasted\, and brilliant.” On top of his prodigious output with Old 97’s\, Miller simultaneously established himself as a prolific solo artist\, as well\, releasing eight studio albums under his own name that garnered similarly wide-ranging acclaim and landed in a slew of prominent film and television soundtracks. A gifted writer beyond his music\, Miller also contributed essays and short stories to The Atlantic\, Salon\, McSweeney’s\, and Sports Illustrated among others\, and in 2019\, he released his debut book\, a collection of poetry for children\, via Little\, Brown and Company. \n\n\nThat joy is utterly palpable on their latest release\, Twelfth.’ Loose and raw\, the record is an ecstatic celebration of survival\, a resounding ode to endurance and resilience from a veteran group that refuses to rest on their considerable laurels. Working out of Sputnik Sound in Nashville\, Miller and his longtime bandmates—bassist Murry Hammond\, guitarist Ken Bethea\, and drummer Philip Peeples—teamed up once again with GRAMMY-winning producer Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton\, Jack White)\, and while the resulting album boasts all the hallmarks of a classic Old 97’s record (sex and booze\, laughter and tears\, poetry and blasphemy)\, it also showcases a newfound perspective in its writing and craftsmanship\, a maturity and appreciation that can only come with age and experience. Perhaps the band is growing up; maybe they’re just getting started. Either way\, Old 97’s have never been happier to be alive. \n\n\nHOLLER CHOIR\n\n\n\nLed by the lyrical craftsmanship of singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter Clint Roberts\, the distinctly Appalachian\, old-time sound of Asheville’s Holler Choir combines haunting harmonies\, stirring string compositions\, and heart-wrenching ballads\, yet hardly conforms to a stereotypical genre. Call it a confluence of old-time\, Americana\, and bluegrass\, but\, by its own exceptional design\, the sound and atmosphere of Holler Choir are singular. Robert’s wordcraft and explosive vocal range is met with the dulcet clawhammer banjo plucking of long-time collaborator Helena Rose and the sturdy timekeeping of upright bassist Norbert McGettigan. With a rotating cast of gifted musicians featured on Holler Choir’s recordings and electrifying live performances\, it’s no wonder they are the band to watch in 2024.

SUMMARY:Coco Montoya\, Blues Guitar Master
DESCRIPTION:Coco Montoya – Blues Guitar Master\nHotel Congress Plaza Stage\nSaturday\, February 24th\, 7 doors\, 7:30 show\n\n\nADV $25 | DOS $30\n\nTickets HERE \n\n\n\n\n“’Just play what you feel\, be real about it\, and enjoy yourself.’ That’s what Albert Collins taught me\,” says the award-winning guitar virtuoso and soul-deep singer Coco Montoya. The self-taught\, left-handed Montoya mastered his craft under Collins’ tutelage. Incorporating lessons learned from his mentors\, the iconic Collins (for whom he originally drummed)\, and UK legend John Mayall\, Montoya puts his own stamp onto every song he performs. Since his first solo album in 1995 (which won him the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist)\, Montoya’s endlessly inventive guitar work and passionate\, hard-hitting vocals have kept him at the top of the blues world. With his new Alligator Records album\, Writing On The Wall (his sixth for the label)\, Montoya delivers what he is already calling one of the best records he’s ever made. For the very first time on Alligator\, he decided to bring his road-tested band—noted keyboardist and songwriter Jeff Paris (Keb’ Mo’\, Bill Withers)\, bassist Nathan Brown\, and drummer Rena Beavers—into the studio with him. Between the camaraderie of the long-time bandmates and the sheer talent of all involved\, the results have left Coco\, in his words\, “over the moon.”  Produced by Grammy Award-winner Tony Braunagel (Bonnie Raitt\, Taj Mahal) and co-produced by Jeff Paris\, Writing On The Wall is a tour-de-force of memorable\, hook-filled songs\, sung with passion and fueled by equally memorable\, top shelf musicianship. Each of the 13 tracks are delivered with heart-pounding emotion. “I am so proud of this one\,” Montoya says of Writing On The Wall. “We recorded in Jeff Paris’ studio and everything just gelled together. And the band inspired me; they all gave extra effort at every turn. \nIn 1969\, Montoya saw Albert King opening a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Iron Butterfly concert at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. He was transformed. “After King got done playing\,” says Montoya\, “my life was changed. When he played\, the music went right into my soul. It grabbed me so emotionally that I had tears welling up in my eyes. Nothing had ever affected me to this level. He showed me what music and playing the blues were all about. I knew that was what I wanted to do.” \nThe next chapter of Montoya’s story was kick-started by a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins. Montoya says\, “Albert was coming through Los Angeles and needed to borrow my drum set\, which I left at the club where he was going to be playing. I went down to see his show that night and it just tore my head off. The thing that I had seen and felt with Albert King came pouring back on me when I saw Albert Collins.” A short time later\, Collins hired Montoya as his band’s drummer. With Albert mentoring Coco on the guitar during the band’s downtime\, Coco soon became Collins’ second guitarist. “We’d sit in hotel rooms for hours and play guitar\,” remembers Montoya. “He’d play that beautiful rhythm of his and just have me play along. He was always saying\, ‘Don’t think about it\, just feel it.’ He was like a father to me\,” says Coco\, who often slept at Collins’ home. When Collins declared Montoya his “son\,” it was the highest praise and affection he could offer. In return\, Montoya learned everything he could from the legendary Master of the Telecaster. Needing a more regular paycheck\, Montoya left Collins’ band after two years and took a job tending bar and jamming on weekends at Los Angeles clubs. One day\, legendary British musician John Mayall heard Coco playing Otis Rush’s “All Your Love”  onstage. Soon after\, Mayall called on Montoya to join his famous Bluesbreakers. Filling the shoes of previous Bluesbreaker guitarists Eric Clapton\, Peter Green and Mick Taylor would not be easy\, but Montoya knew he could not pass up the opportunity to play with another legend. For the next ten years he toured the world and recorded with Mayall on seven albums\, soaking up the experience of life on the road and in the recording studio. \nMontoya’s recorded debut as a bandleader came with 1995’s Gotta Mind To Travel. The album became an instant fan favorite. Blues enthusiasts\, radio programmers and critics sent praise from all corners. The album immediately made it clear that Montoya ranked among the best players on the contemporary scene. Two more Blind Pig albums followed\, and Coco was well on his way. In 2000\, Montoya’s Alligator debut\, Suspicion\, quickly became the best-selling album of his career\, earning regular radio airplay on over 120 stations nationwide. Montoya’s fan base exploded. After two more highly successful and massively popular Alligator releases—2002’s Can’t Look Back and 2007’s Dirty Deal—Montoya signed with Ruf Records\, cutting both a live and a studio album. Returning to Alligator with 2017’s Hard Truth and 2019’s Coming In Hot\, the guitar master continued to blaze his trail. “Montoya unleashes one career-topping performance after another\,” declared the UK’s Blues Matters. \nAn indefatigable road warrior\, Montoya continues to tour virtually nonstop\, bringing audiences to their feet from New York to New Orleans to Chicago to San Francisco. Across the globe\, he’s performed in Australia\, Belgium\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Norway\, England\, Brazil\, Argentina\, Spain\, Mexico\, Ecuador\, Italy\, Poland\, Russia\, the Czech Republic and Canada. Now\, with the dynamic Writing On The Wall and a tour calendar busting at the seams\, Coco Montoya is as excited as he’s ever been to perform the new songs live with his burning-hot band. Montoya’s well-earned reputation as an eye-popping live performer precedes him. Vintage Guitar states\, “Coco keeps getting better and better. He plays with fire and passion rarely seen in this day and age.” Billboard declares\, “In a world of blues guitar pretenders\, Coco Montoya is the real McCoy. He exudes power and authenticity. Be prepared to get scorched by the real thing.” \nArtist website: https://www.cocomontoyaband.com/

DESCRIPTION:THE TUCSON OPRY: 2023 Holiday Edition \nSaturday\, Dec. 9th\nDoors at 6\, show at 6:30\nTickets $20 advance\, $25 day of show\nTICKETS HERE \nJoin us on the Plaza for a holiday edition of the Tucson Opry! This Opry-style variety show hosted by Chris Brashear features the zany Robbie Fulks\, Mamma Coal & Alvin Blaine\, Mariachi Las Aguilitas\, poet Logan Phillips\, and more! \nRobbie Fulks wildly adventurous spirit has defined a critically acclaimed 30-year career that has included 15 solo albums and two GRAMMY® nominations. He came to national attention as a defining artist of the alt-country scene in the 1990s\, with releases on the Chicago-based indie Bloodshot Records\, North Carolina’s Yep Roc\, and Los Angeles’s Geffen Records. While Fulks’s aversion to genre constraints and conventions has sometimes made him hard to pigeonhole\, American country music\, in the widest sense\, is his home base — whether the country of Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, Merle Haggard\, Bobby Charles\, or Mississippi John Hurt. For the last ten years\, he has focused on his writing and performing with homespun tales and acoustic instruments. \nBluegrass Vacation\, his latest detour just released\, Bluegrass Vacation\, features highly regarded musicians such as Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Sierra Hull\, John Cowan\, Chris Eldridge\, Tim O’Brien\, Stuart Duncan\, Dennis Crouch\, Ronnie McCoury\, David Grier\, Todd Phillips\, Missy Raines and\, not least of all\, Compass founder Alison Brown. \nFulks was born in York\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania\, the North Carolina Piedmont\, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad\, banjo from the Earl Scruggs instruction book\, and songwriting by a trial-and-error process that is still going on. He attended Columbia College in New York City in 1980 and dropped out in 1982 to focus on the Greenwich Village songwriter scene. He moved to Chicago in the mid 1980s\, joining Greg Cahill’s bluegrass outfit Special Consensus and teaching at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

SUMMARY:The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:STEEL WHEELS\nTuesday\, November 14\nHotel Congress Plaza Stage\nDoors 7pm\, Show 7:30pm\n$15 Advance\, $20 Day of Show\nTickets HERE\nArtist info  |  Listen-Look#1     Listen Look #2  \nThis Virginia-based band has a strong bluegrass underpinning but growing up influenced by rock\, pop and country their sound leans into a mix of styles. Playing acoustic music with warmth\, a sense of authority\, and a tuneful approach they don’t get too far away from a traditional sound.  The Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, influenced by the familiar sounds of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. The band embraces a collection of truly American sounds\, reaching from the mountain hollers to the fields. \nIn 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. \nHaving gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. \nIn 2020\, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings\, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios\, the Everyone a Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring\, yet ephemeral\, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast\, “We Made You a Song”\, explores the stories behind these songs\, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth\, a wedding\, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. \nNowhere is this shared humanity more evident than at the band’s own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by The Steel Wheels every summer\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals or Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine \nWhether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song.
